A former leading figure at Northumbrian Water has also been made an MBE.
David Archbold has spent 42 years working for the company, retiring earlier this year from his post as head of commercial.
The 59-year-old, from Felton, Northumberland, worked on the pioneering Tees Estuary Environmental Scheme.
The scheme involved the development of the Bran Sands Effluent Treatment Works, at the time one of the largest treatment works in Europe, treating waste water from both industry and the domestic community.
David was also involved with the development of leisure facilities for Northumbrian Water, particularly at Kielder Water and Forest Park. He said: "I am absolutely delighted. It is so nice for your work to be recognised - I was speechless when I opened the letter from the Cabinet Office. I feel really honoured."
