Nigel nets top bag in match at Derwent

20/12/2009

Well, the winter has certainly hit us with a vengeance. There is a bit of snow and the forecast is not too promising with more heavy white stuff and minus temperatures predicted this week.

Not that this will stop that hardy bunch of Geordies who will venture out whatever the conditions. The first coarse match on the Derwent Reservoir last Sunday was voted an outstanding success by those who took part.

Despite very cold conditions, there were 10 double-figure nets of roach, with the best of these taken by Nigel Ripley fishing under the Big Waters ID Fishing banner. Nigel's winning net of 15lb 12ozs was taken from Cronkley Point on maggot and bomb. Mark Arrowsmith, fishing for Anglers Services, took second with 13lb 8ozs taken on the feeder and maggot.

The match, sponsored by Northumbria Water, raised pounds 465 for the Great North Air Ambulance. Special thanks must go to organiser Steve Hoggins and to Don Coe of Northumbria Water for their efforts.

Let's hope this is the first of many such events on this water. Sunday's match on the Angel saw anglers struggle in the cold conditions. John Madison won with 24lb 10ozs from Ted Hudson with 15lb 15ozs.

Sunderland's final winter league match on Silksworth was a real tester.

Ten small roach gave Ian Foster the victory with a paltry 11ozs, Roy Gillett took second with 8ozs.

Overall victory in the league went to Andy McNiel. who tied on points with Roy Gillett but won on overall weight.

Today, Big Waters fish the second of their winter series at Aldin Grange.

Sunderland FAC fish the Christmas Cheer match on Silksworth and Yarm AA fish the annual Fur and Feather on the Tees at Yarm.

Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish all of my readers a happy and healthy Christmas!
