Beware as water work set to start

22/12/2009

Improving the quality of Teesside's water is likely to cause traffic disruption in the New Year, as Northumbrian Water invests £810,000 to upgrade sewerage networks.

The work, which will begin on Monday, January 4, and is due for completion by the end of March, will improve water quality at Cross Beck and Holme Beck in Eston, Dab Holme Gut in Lazenby and Kinkerdale Beck in Middlesbrough.

Northumbrian Water is urging residents to be vigilant of bogus callers as it is very unlikely employees will need to access customers' homes.

Four combined sewer overflows are to be installed as part of Northumbrian Water's £85m environmental investment programme.

A total of 481 overflows, which discharge waste water into watercourses in times of heavy rainfall to protect land and properties from flooding, will also be upgraded and screened throughout the region.

Traffic disruption is expected at Pasture Lane in Lazenby, Ampleforth Avenue and the High Street in Eston. Northumbrian Water pledged to minimise congestion.

Ian Cunliffe, project manager for the scheme, said: "We appreciate that this essential work will cause some disruption, but customers should be reassured that we will do all we can, through careful planning with Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, to reduce the impact."

Traffic management will include Stop/Go boards on Ampleforth Avenue at its junction with Abbey Court between 8am and 4pm from January 4 to March 12.

Two-way traffic lights will appear on Church Lane, Eston, from Monday, January 25 to Friday, February 12 and on High Street, Eston, between Friday, March 5 and Monday March 8.

Tees Dock Road, Middlesbrough, will have two-way traffic lights from March 9 to March 26.
