With rivers still full and out of sorts, coarse anglers have been seeking sport on stillwaters with varying degree of success.
The cooler weather saw Whittle Dene close its doors last Sunday until March in a week when fewer than 10 anglers turned up to fish in the last few days, but ide – a species unaffected by colder weather – have been providing sport at both Dissington Pond and Aldin grange.
Certainly the Tyne Anglers Alliance roach match, arranged thanks to Northumbrian Water’s Don Coe on Derwent Reservoir, was a real success.
Nigel Ripley of Big Waters AC won with15lb 12oz of roach to 14oz taken on the bomb from Cronkley Point. Mark Arrowsmith was second with 13lb 8oz, while Paul Hoult and Keith Ainsley both tied on 12lb 8oz, ahead of Steve Wood with 12lb 6oz and Andy Fisher on 12lb 2oz.
The success of the event, organised by TAA Tyne rep Steve Hoggins, was not just in the catches, as the match raised £500 for the Great North Air Ambulance. Thanks to the EA’s Mick Donkin the fish were restocked into four locations – Wydon Burn, Hexham; the Tyne at Ovingham; Four in One’s water at Thornborugh; and Ryton’s fishery at Stargate
The last match in the Sunderland FAC’s Winter League series was fished on a cold and clear Silksworth and it turned out to be another hard match. Ian Foster won with 10 small roach and perch for 11oz ahead of Roy Gillett with 8oz, but the overall league positions ended in a points tie between Roy and Andy McNiel. However, Andy won the split decision as he had amassed the greater weight.
Sunday’s match on The Angel was won by Johnny Madison with 24lb 10oz, with Ted Hudson second on 15lb 15oz and Anth Richardson third with three ounces fewer.
Thornaby AA’s match on the Tees at Croft saw Anthony Alderson of Darlington win with five chub for 12lb 13oz, all taken on bread. Graham Ellison was second with 11lb 2oz and Paul Stainsby third with 9lb 8oz. Further down river, Yarm AA’s match was a struggle. Derek Reaney won with a sole bream and a few perch for 7lb 4oz, ahead of both Peter Rambow snr and Brian Armstrong, who tied on 6lb 8oz.
CADCAC’s Winter League match on Loch Ken saw most anglers struggle to catch. Effion Harris, using long-distance ledgering tactics, caught skimmers and roach to win with 8lb 5oz, while Mark Harris, who also fished the tip, was second with 8lb 3oz. Alan Walsh, who was third, caught roach close in on the whip.
