£4m plan unveiled to reduce flood risk

24/12/2008

A £4m PLAN was announced yesterday to reduce the risk of flooding to 43 homes in North Tyneside.

Northumbrian Water is spending the cash to upgrade its sewerage network in the Briardene, Monkseaton, Cullercoats and Whitley Bay areas.

The 14-month flood alleviation scheme, which will begin on Monday, January 26, will be carried out in phases and will involve upgrading and increasing the diameter of 1.2km of sewer pipe and installing a large storage tank.

Residents affected by the first phase of work, in the Briardene area, have been invited to a customer information session on Tuesday, January 6, at St John’s Methodist Church, Balmoral Gardens, Whitley Bay, between 2pm and 7pm.

Ian Davison, project manager for the Northumbrian Water scheme, said: “The first phase of work will reduce the risk of flooding to 21 houses on Briardene Road, Garsdale Road, Goresdene Road, Briardene Crescent and Hastings Avenue and involve 800 metres of sewer pipe being enlarged.

“We appreciate that being a victim of flooding is very unpleasant and reducing the risk of flooding is one of Northumbrian Water’s top priorities.

“I encourage customers in the area to drop in at our customer information session where they can find out more about the work and how it will affect them.” Residents in the Briardene area will receive information about the work and an invitation to the customer information session in writing.

The water company will write to other affected residents as the improvement work progresses.

Northumbrian Water said that during the first phase of work it will be necessary to have traffic measures in place, which will take place at:

:: The Links (A193) southbound carriageway – Sections of road closed from Friday, January 30 to Monday, February 23.

:: The Links (A193) northbound carriageway – Sections of road to be closed from Tuesday, February 24 to Wednesday, March 11.

:: Gerrard Road – Road closure between numbers 4 and 24 from Monday, March 2 to Wednesday, April 1.
