Academy head says, c'mon down, we're here for you

22/12/2008

A state-of-the-art facility for young and old. That was the message today from the new principal of the multimillion-pound Castle View Enterprise Academy.

And as construction work nears completion, Janet Bridges, a County Durham headteacher who will lead the purpose-built academy, said she hoped to see the whole of the community benefit from the development.

"We want to see everyone make use of the academy," she said. "We want to open up the recording and dance studios, the meeting rooms and computers to people in the area. We also want to integrate the Castle View Sports Centre into the academy, the gym and other equipment, and really get people involved in what's happening here."

Janet's success in transforming her previous school, Stanley School of Technology, helped her clinch the post.

The academy is expected to open on the site of Castle View School, which it is replacing, in September 2009.

"The project is progressing very well. Indeed many aspects of the design and the classrooms are starting to take shape ," she said.

"We recently had Niall Quinn visit the site to see how things were going and he was very impressed by it and the standard of the facilities that are going to be made available to the students."

Gateshead-born Janet, 48, a Newcastle University graduate, taught in Northumberland and Easington before becoming headteacher of Stanley School of Technology in 2002.

Results since have earned it recognition as one of the highest-performing secondary schools in the country for the last two years.

Northumbrian Water is the main sponsor for the Castle View Enterprise Academy, which is one of three being created in Sunderland as part of Sunderland City Council's £120million Building Schools for the Future programme.

"When I heard Northumbrian Water were involved in the project, I was impressed," she said. "I was aware of their commitment to the community and education.

"And with their involvement, along with Sunderland Council's, we're confident the partnership make the academy a huge success."

The first academy, in Pennywell, sponsored by housing group gentoo, has already opened while the third academy, expected to open about the same time as Castle View, will replace Hylton Red House School and is being sponsored by the Leighton Group.

As well as the three academies, it will also be all-change at Washington School, which will be rebuilt by September 2009 and Biddick School Sports College and St Robert of Newminster RC School will be refurbished by January 2010.
