Surfers in Saltburn and Tynemouth are celebrating an Environment Agency decision they say will keep beaches cleaner next winter.
They have rejected a Northumbrian Water application to turn off ultra-violet disinfection sewage treatment from October to April at Marske-by-the-Sea.
A spokesman said: "This will maintain clean, safe recreational water."
