A WATER company has issued security advice to householders following a spate of bogus caller incidents in the region.
On five occasions this week men have called at the homes of pensioners across County Durham claiming to be either from the 'water board' or 'the gas company'.
It is thought they wanted to gain access to the homes to steal money or property but fortunately they appear to have left empty-handed each time.
advertisementLeanne Clough, communications advisor for Northumbrian Water, said bogus callers often claim to work for the company or the water board but that it is very rare a genuine employee will request access to a customer's property without an appointment.
She said: "If someone does knock at the door claiming to be from Northumbrian Water or the water board then customer should keep the door locked or on a chain until that have checked the caller's identification.
"All legitimate callers have an ID card that can be passed through a letter box and customers can look for Northumbrian Water branding on clothing and vehicles.
"Any genuine representative will not mind waiting while their ID is checked. If in doubt, keep them out."
She said customers can register a pass word with the company which genuine representatives will know when asked for it, for details and to register a password call 0845 717 1100.
