On your marks for Druridge run

10/04/2008

THE second Druridge Bay 10k run will take place on Bank Holiday Sunday, May 25, raising money for the British Heart Foundation.

It is expected to attract twice as many entrants as last year with participants arriving from as far afield as Glasgow and London, according to co-ordinator Ade Barrass, (pictured).

"We've been overwhelmed with the response from local entrants and have had numerous inquiries from running clubs throughout the northern region following last year's event," he said.

"The run is a charitable event and is open to people of mixed abilities whereby entrants can participate by running, walking or jogging round the course.

"We would like to once again thank Northumberland County Council for allowing use of its Druridge Bay County Park facilities."

The course incorporates a panoramic section of Druridge Bay's famous shoreline.

Last year's inaugural event was hosted as part of a full weekend of fundraising activities that culminated in Red Row Sports Club breaking the Guinness Book of Records 34 hour worldcricket endurance record.

It raised more than £11,000 in aid of Asthma UK and charitable-arm, Northern Rock Foundation, double-matched contributions to increase the total sum raised from this single event to £34,000.

This year's run is not as yet match-funded but is expected to raise a similar amount.

"We are very grateful for the tremendous support received last year from Northern Rock as well as other leading sponsor companies such as UK Coal and Northumbrian Water," said Mr Barrass.

All participants will receive an information pack, registration number and free British Heart Foundation teeshirt.

There will be a maximum of 1,000 entrants and participation is open to anyone aged 13 years or over. For entry forms, contact Druridge Bay Country Park Manager Graham Mitcheson on 01670 760 968. Entry forms can also be directly downloaded from druridgebay@northumberland.gov.uk
