A COMPANY boss is hoping to spend more than a penny as he rides his 'bog standard' bike in aid of charity.
Charity enthusiast Dave Whiteley is hoping to raise as much as he can for the developing world by cycling five miles on his customised bike – a bicycle with a real toilet and cistern attached as the seat.
The Northumbrian Water facility manager, who is responsible for the water company's sites from Berwick down to North Yorkshire and across to the Pennines, is raising money for WaterAid – a charity which provides sanitation and clean, safe water in Africa and Asia.
Dave, who was flushed with his effort, cycled from the company's head office in Pity Me, Durham, to nearby Barkers Haugh sewage treatment works on Monday.
Employees of Northumbrian Water also marked World Toilet Day by taking part in other activities to raise money for WaterAid, including cake bakes and donation tubs.
Dave, 55, who lives in Tynemouth, said: "Imagine life without a toilet in your home.
