UP to 20,000 plastic ducks are to be poured into the River Wear as part of an annual charity event.

The Grand Durham DUCK Race takes place on the River Wear next Sunday, November 18.

It is organised by Durham University Charities Kommittee (DUCK) and supported by Northumbrian Water and Marketing Durham.

advertisementDUCK Manager Anthony Boden said: "The race is the the jewel in the crown of DUCK's events, bringing together the student body and the local community and raising money for some very worthwhile causes."

The event will be held at 1pm between Elvet Bridge and Kingsgate Bridge in Durham City.

The owner of the winning duck ticket will receive 1,000, and the second and third places will win 300 and 200 respectively.

Proceeds from this year's race will go towards Northumbrian Water's adopted international charity WaterAid, providing clean water, safe sanitation and hygiene education in seventeen of the poorest countries around the world.

Money raised will also go to Butterwick Hospice Care based in Stockton on Tees and Bishop Auckland, the Mayor's Appeal, and Durham City Christmas Lights.

Each duck costs just £1 to sponsor and tickets are available to buy from Durham Tourist Information Centre, Prince Bishops Shopping Centre, Durham Students' Union and Clayport Library.
