As part of Northumbrian Water’s commitment to our local communities we sponsored the North East ‘Schools Awards’. These awards celebrate two things, first, the achievements and outstanding contributions that individuals have made to our children’s lives. Secondly, it rewards projects that have enhanced the curriculum, providing our children with a greater understanding of the environment, the community and how to live healthier lives. With 10 award categories plus the prestigious Northumbrian Water School of the Year, 68 schools entered from across the region all hopeful of a place in the final.
The final for the Schools Awards was held at the Centre for Life at the end of March 2007. One of the highlights of the event was Thornhill School, a finalist in the Active Community category, who gave a performance of their anti racist rap. Their lead singer Amer Shiekh is the schools chemistry teacher, who won the Inspirational Secondary Teacher award, chemistry lessons in Thornhill School must be very popular!
