Now in their fifth year the Northumbrian Water Schools Awards run in association with The Journal and the Evening Gazette, celebrate the achievements and outstanding contributions that individuals have made to our children’s lives.
Alongside this they reward projects that have enhanced the curriculum, providing our children with a greater understanding of the environment, the community and how to live healthier lives.
In July we held the awards ceremony at the Centre for Life in Newcastle the audience of students, school staff and special guests were treated to performances, including poetry and dance, from the talented finalists.
There were nine award categories and an overall School of the Year award, which was presented to King James 1 Academy in Bishop Auckland, County Durham.
King James 1 Academy also received the Active Community award and Stephen Elliot from the school won Inspirational Secondary School Teacher of the Year Award.
Edmondsley Primary School in County Durham won the Sustainable School Award and was 'highly-commended' in the overall School of the Year category.
Norma Hart won the Caretaker of the Year Award for her commitment to her role at Bearpark Primary School in County Durham, which she has held for 25 years.
Michael Glenton from The Sele First School in Hexham, Northumberland, was named Inspirational Primary School Teacher of the Year.
The Newspaper of the Year Award went to The King Edward VI School in Morpeth, Northumberland, for its polished publication called the Student Review.
The Healthy School Award went to Pallister Park Primary in Middlesbrough.
Alan White from Manor College of Technology in Hartlepool was named Headteacher of the Year. It was a particularly special award for Mr White, as he retires at the end of this term.
Dawne Taylor from Columbia Grange School in Sunderland was awarded the Support Staff of the Year Award for helping to establish a team of Eco Warriors and setting up a gardening club.
