Residents in North Tyneside are being advised that their tap water might be temporarily discoloured as essential work to safeguard tap water quality continues.
Northumbrian Water is currently carrying out a major £30 million scheme to clean or upgrade 156km of trunk water mains in Northumberland, North Tyneside and Newcastle.
Trunk water mains are large diameter pipes which move water around the region.
The scheme, which began in 2007 and will be complete next year, will now involve cleaning 5km of pipe in the Great Lime Road area of Killingworth.
This phase of work will begin on Monday August 9 2010 and to ensure customers’ water supply is maintained Northumbrian Water will move water around the network.
As a result residents in Hadrian Park, Cochrane Park, Longbenton, Benton, Killingworth, Palmersville, Forest Hall, Willington and Wallsend may experience occasional discoloured water for short periods of time over the next six months.
Richard Johnson, project manager for the scheme, said: “This essential work will, in the long term, reduce the likelihood of discoloured water and safeguard tap water quality. We would like to reassure customers that although discoloured water is not pleasant it is totally safe to use and should not be cause for concern.
“Discoloured water can be cleared by running the first mains-fed tap in the property for a short period of time. If the supply does not clear this process should be repeated a couple of hours later. There is no need to alert us of discoloured water relating to this work. .
“Washing machines, dishwashers and other appliances plumbed into the mains supply should only be used if the supply is running clear.”
