Pallion flood protection

26/07/2010

Work to reduce the risk of property flooding is to begin in a suburb of Sunderland.

Northumbrian Water is investing £450,000 to install 230 metres of new sewer pipe at St Luke’s Road, Meldon Road, Maxwell Street and Merle Terrace in Pallion.

In times of extremely heavy rainfall the sewerage network has struggled to cope with the volume of water and this has resulted in flooding to two properties on St Luke’s Road and Stratfield Street.

The improvement programme, which will begin on Monday, August 9 2010 and take four months to complete, is part of Northumbrian Water’s £1.2 billion programme between 2010 and 2015 to upgrade its vast water and sewerage networks.

Paul Rutter, Northumbrian Water’s project manager, said: “We appreciate that property flooding is distressing for customers so reducing this risk is one of Northumbrian Water’s top priorities.

“This scheme will offer residents of Pallion some flood protection for the future and we are working closely with Sunderland City Council to ensure inconvenience is kept to a minimum.”

During the course of the work it will be necessary to have temporary traffic management in place.

All dates are provisional and subject to change.

Access to Ashton Grange care home on St Luke’s Road will be maintained at all times during the course of the work, and the contractor will show discretion on working times around St Luke’s Church.

Construction traffic will need access to the area where improvement work is being carried out and to the site compound, in land off Maxwell Street.

Customers who require further information or advice should ring Northumbrian Water’s customer centre on 0845 717 1100.

It is very unlikely that anyone from the water company will need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in Sunderland and customers are urged to be vigilant of bogus callers.
