Washington flood scheme invite

04/03/2010

Residents are being invited to find out more about a flood protection scheme in Washington.

Northumbrian Water is investing £1.2 million to increase the capacity of the sewerage network and install an underground storm water storage tank in the Avebury Drive area of the town.

The improvement work is to begin on Monday, March 22 2010 and will take up to seven months to complete.

Residents affected by the work are invited to drop in and find out more at a customer information session to be held on Tuesday March 9 2010 in the main hall at John F Kennedy Primary School, Station Road, Colombia, Washington, Tyne & Wear, NE38 7AR, between 4.00pm and 7.00pm.

In times of extremely heavy rainfall the sewerage network has struggled to cope with the volume of storm water, which has resulted in internal flooding to 19 properties on Avebury Drive and Glebe Crescent.

David Groark, project manager for the Northumbrian Water scheme, said: “We appreciate that flooding is distressing and reducing the risk of property flooding is one of Northumbrian Water’s priorities.

“The work will involve installing 1.1 kilometres of sewer pipe which runs along Glebe Crescent, Station Road, John F Kennedy Estate and the football field south of this estate.

“We will also be installing an underground storage tank in open land adjacent to Avebury Drive, with a capacity of 1.2 million litres. In times of heavy rainfall wastewater will be stored in the tank, to be returned to the sewerage network after the storm.

“Customers will benefit from dropping in at our customer information session where the project team will be on hand to answer any questions they may have.”

It will be necessary to have traffic management in place during the course of this essential work.
