Dinnington sewerage upgrade begins
17/02/2010
Work on an essential environmental scheme in Newcastle upon Tyne is to begin next week.
Northumbrian Water is to invest £125,000 to upgrade the sewerage network in the
Dinnington area.
The work, which will begin on
Monday February 22 2010 and take up to three months to complete, will involve installing a new screened combined sewer overflow in land off Prestwick Carr Road.
Combined sewer overflows are consented by the Environment Agency to discharge wastewater into watercourses in times of very heavy rainfall, to protect properties and surrounding land from flooding. The screened overflow will have a positive impact on river water quality to
Prestwick Carr.
Simon Bligh, project manager for the scheme, said: “This work is part of an £85 million investment between 2005 and 2010 to upgrade and screen 481 combined sewer overflows throughout the region, which will further improve river and bathing water quality.
“We appreciate that this essential work will cause some disruption, but customers should be reassured that we will do all we can, through careful planning with Newcastle City Council, to reduce the impact on residents. We thank customers in advance for their patience during the course of the work.”
It will be necessary to close a section of Prestwick Carr Road for the full duration of the work, from north of Dinnington West Pumping Station to the junction with March Terrace. Pedestrian access will be maintained.
Construction traffic will need access to the sites where the work is being carried out, and the site compound, located on Prestwick Carr Road.
It is very unlikely that Northumbrian Water employees will need to access customers’ homes while the work is carried out and people should be vigilant of bogus callers.
