Shoring up environmental investment

11/12/2008

Bathing water quality in Northumberland is to be further improved by a £950,000 scheme.

Northumbrian Water is to upgrade its network in the Alnmouth area to prevent sewage being discharged to sea.

The environmental scheme, which will begin on Monday, January 19 2009 and take up to nine months to complete, will involve installing a new septic tank and 250 metres of sewer and outfall pipe.

Residents in the area are invited to drop in at a customer information session to be held at Alnmouth Golf Club on Wednesday, December 19 2008 between 3.00pm and 8.00pm.  Representatives from Northumbrian Water and their contractors will be on hand to answer any questions residents may have.

Glyn Jenkins, Northumbrian Water’s project manager, said:  “Delivering excellent service to customers and protecting the environment is at the heart of all we do.  I encourage residents to come along to the customer information session to find out more about the work.

“This improvement work will significantly improve bathing water quality in the area.  Since the 1990s we have invested more than £1 billion to clean up the beautiful North East coastline.”

The water company is working with relevant agencies, including Natural England, to ensure wildlife in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is protected.  No work will be carried out on the affected section of beach between November and March, which is important for its wintering purple sandpiper and turnstone birds.

During the course of the work it will be necessary to close the public footpath which leads from Alnmouth Golf Club onto the beach and a diversion route will be put in place.

Residents should be reassured that everything will be done to keep disruption to a minimum.  Customers with special needs or any concerns should ring Northumbrian Water on 0845 717 1100.

It is very unlikely that anyone from the water company will need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out.  If customers are in any doubt of a caller claiming to be from the water company, they should not let them into their home. They should ring the company’s customer centre to confirm the caller’s identity.
