£1 million quality investment

28/11/2008

River water quality is to be improved in Teesdale as a one million pound scheme gets underway.

Work has begun this week by Northumbrian Water to upgrade and screen ten combined sewer overflows in the Barnard Castle, Middleton-in-Teesdale, Cotherstone and Egglestone areas.

Combined sewer overflows are designed, and consented by the Environment Agency, to discharge wastewater into watercourses in times of very heavy rainfall to protect properties and surrounding land from flooding.

The five-month scheme will improve water quality in the River Tees and smaller watercourses including Hudeshope Beck and the River Balder.

Steve Gray, Northumbrian Water’s project manager, said:  “Protecting and improving the environment is at the core of our business.  Upgrading and screening combined sewer overflows significantly improves river water quality and we are investing £85 million between 2005 and 2010 to improve 500 overflows across the region.

”While we carry out the scheme in Barnard Castle and surrounding areas we are working closely with Durham County and Teesdale District Councils to plan the improvement work and customers should be reassured that we will do what we can to keep disruption to a minimum.”

During the course of the work it will be necessary to have traffic management in place.  A section of the back lane rear of Raby Avenue will be closed from Monday, January 26 2009 for up to five weeks.

Traffic management will also be in place at the junction of Flatts Road, Scar Top Road and Galgate from Monday, January 5 2009 for up to 12 weeks.  This will not affect traffic travelling to and from Galgate to Horsemarket.

The site compound will be located in the field next to Demesnes Mill, Barnard Castle, for the duration of the work.

Those directly affected by the work will receive information in writing.  For further information and advice customers should ring the Northumbrian Water Customer Centre on 0845 717 1100.
