Star wicket keeper Phil Mustard caught a duck to launch the Grand Durham DUCK Race.
Twenty thousand yellow plastic ducks will be tipped from a giant digger off Elvet Bridge in Durham City at 1pm on Sunday 16 November.
The person who has bought the winning £1 charity ticket for the sponsored race to Kingsgate will win £1,000 and second place wins £300 and third £200.
Sunderland-born Phil, aged 26, who was brought up in Washington and now lives in Newcastle, keeps wicket for Championship Trophy winners Durham County Cricket Club.
He said: “I hope I don’t get many ducks next season but I’m only too pleased to catch this one to help promote this years’ grand Durham duck race.”
Four good causes will benefit from the charity duck race: WaterAid, St Cuthberts Hospice, The Durham Christmas Lights Appeal and The Mayor’s Appeal which this year is the County Durham Society for Blind and Partially Sighted.
Mayor of Durham City, Councillor Grenville Holland will be at the controls of the digger to start the annual duck race, organised by the Durham University Charities Kommittee (DUCK) in partnership with Marketing Durham and sponsored by Northumbrian Water.
Winners will be announced on the Durham market place stage from about 5pm on Sunday (16Nov) when Durham cricketers show off the Championship Trophy and then Coronation Street actors Simon Gregson, who plays Steve McDonald, and Katherine Kelly, who is Becky Grainger in the soap, switch on the Christmas Lights.
Entertainment in the market place starts after the duck race from 1.30pm and includes singing by Natalie Anderson, who plays nurse Stella Davenport from the TV programme The Royal.
Duck tickets are available from Prince Bishops Shopping Centre and the Durham Students Union. They will also be sold on Elvet Bridge and in the city centre on Sunday.
