Quality treatment

27/10/2008

River water quality is to be improved as work begins at a Northumberland sewage treatment works.

Northumbrian Water is investing £2.7 million to upgrade Morpeth sewage treatment works.

The work, which is to begin this week, will take up to nine months to complete and improve water quality of the River Wansbeck.

Morpeth sewage treatment works treats more than four million litres of wastewater every day from 17,000 customers in the area.
Dean Thompson, project manager for the scheme, said: “River water quality is strictly regulated and this work, which will involve improving the facilities on site, is being carried out to meet
ever-increasing European quality standards.

“The work will also improve the efficiency of the treatment works which was built in the 1920s.”

Construction traffic will access the site via an access road off Salisbury Street, leading to Green Lane.

Anyone who has queries about the work should ring the Northumbrian Water Customer Centre on 0845 717 1100.

Representatives from the water company will not need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out at Morpeth sewage treatment works. If a customer is in any doubt about the validity of a caller claiming to be from Northumbrian Water, they should not let them into their home. They should ring the company’s customer centre to confirm the caller’s identity.
