Flood alleviation work - Wearside

23/10/2008

A flood of investment will protect and improve the environment on Wearside.

Northumbrian Water is to invest £1 million to upgrade the sewerage network in the Dovedale Road and Torver Crescent area of Sunderland.

The work, which begins on Monday 3, November 2008 and is due to be completed within six months, will reduce the risk of flooding to six properties on Dovedale Road.

The scheme involves upgrading 330 meters of sewer pipe along Dovedale Road to the junction of Torver Crescent.

Customers can find out more about the work and raise any questions or concerns they may have at a drop-in customer information session which is being held on Thursday 30, October 2008 at the Fulwell Methodist Church, Dovedale Road, Sunderland from 2.00pm to 7.00pm.

Michael Ciaraldi, Northumbrian Water’s project manager, said: “This work will have a positive environmental impact as it will reduce the risk of property flooding by increasing capacity of the local sewerage system.”

“We will do all we can, through careful planning with Sunderland City Council to keep any disruption to a minimum.”

As work progresses, it will be necessary to close sections of Dovedale Road to Torver Crescent during working hours, between the beginning of November 2008 and the end of April 2009.  Out of working hours, it will then be necessary to have temporary traffic lights in place to allow through traffic, which will gradually move along Dovedale Road and Torver Crescent.  However, traffic management will be removed over the two week Christmas and New Year period.

It is very unlikely that anyone from Northumbrian Water will need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out.

If customers are in any doubt of a caller claiming to be from the water company, they should not let them into their home. They should ring the company’s customer centre on 0845 717 1100 to confirm the caller’s identity.
