Essential environmental improvement work

16/10/2008

Work to improve river water quality in Tynedale is to begin next week.

Northumbrian Water is to invest £850,000 to upgrade the sewerage network in the Hexham area.

The work, which will begin on Wednesday, October 22 2008 and last for up to six months, will improve water quality in the River Tyne and Cockshaw Burn.

Seven combined sewer overflows and small sections of sewer pipe are to be upgraded.  Combined sewer overflows are designed, and consented by the Environment Agency, to discharge wastewater into watercourses in times of very heavy rainfall to protect properties and surrounding land from flooding.

The combined sewer overflows will be screened to improve river water quality and also ensure ever-increasing European water quality standards are met.

Work to upgrade the combined sewer overflow in Eilansgate will begin on Wednesday, October 22 2008.  It will be necessary to close a section of the west-bound lane on Eilansgate between Eilansgate Terrace and Kingsgate Terrace for up to seven weeks.  Both lanes of this section of Eilansgate will be closed from Monday, October 27 2008 for up to two weeks, between 9.00am and 3.00pm.

Danny Coyne, Northumbrian Water’s project manager, said:  “This is essential work and we appreciate that it will cause inconvenience.  People should be reassured we will do what we can to reduce the impact on motorists and residents.

“We have worked closely with Northumberland County Council to plan the work and have avoided working during summer months or over the two-week Christmas period.  When considering traffic management, we have taken into account the half-term week when traffic is quieter.  We thank people for their patience in advance.”

Locations of other combined sewer overflows to be upgraded include Tanners Row, Tyne Green, Outlet Lane and Priestlands Close.  Residents directly affected by the work will receive notification in writing.

Customers with special needs or any concerns should ring Northumbrian Water on 0845 717 1100.

It is very unlikely that anyone from the water company will need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out.  If customers are in any doubt of a caller claiming to be from the water company, they should not let them into their home. They should ring the company’s customer centre to confirm the caller’s identity.
