A splash of cash for community projects - County Durham

10/07/2008

Community groups and projects in the region have received a flood of donations from a local water company.

Northumbrian Water awarded £13,087 in the last financial year (April 2007 to March 2008) to various projects throughout County Durham.

The grants, which have been administered by County Durham Foundation, will benefit people from toddlers to grandparents in Barnard Castle, Catchgate, Chester Le Street, Consett, Crookhall, Croxdale, Darlington, Dipton, Durham City, Escombe and Witton Park, Esh Winning, Langley Park, Leadgate, Middleton in Teesdale, Newton Hall, Quarrington Hill, St. John’s Chapel, Sedgefield, Stanhope, Stanley, Trimdon, Westgate and Wheatley Hill.

The Northumbrian Water fund was established in 1995 with a pledge of £10,000 a year for 10 years. The income generated by the fund is used to support community groups and projects throughout County Durham and the Northumbrian Water fund has given away nearly £71,585 to more than 128 different groups so far.

Reverend Joanne Thorns, Anglican Minister of All Saints Church, Newton Hall, said: “Northumbrian Water’s donation of £800 enabled us to refurbish the church kitchen, enabling us to hold social functions for the community, such as our twice-monthly Saturday coffee morning.”

Alison Broom, Chief Executive of the County Durham Foundation, said: “Northumbrian Water has held a fund with us for 13 years and in this time they have invested considerable time and money into their support of the local community. Their charitable fund is a fantastic example of what can be achieved by a company who aspires to make a real difference to the lives of people locally. We are delighted to have been able to provide the means for Northumbrian Water to reach out into the community and hope that others will be inspired to follow in their example.”

Louise Hunter, Northumbrian Water’s Corporate Responsibility Manager, said: “Our support for community and environmental projects is testament to how we are immersed in the communities we serve.”

County Durham Foundation provides a service to individuals, families and companies who want to help the local community. Since its launch in 1995, the community foundation, which now manages more than 90 funds in County Durham, has awarded grants of almost £14 million on behalf of its donors to 4,700 community groups.
