Community groups and projects in the region have received a flood of donations from a local water company.
Northumbrian Water awarded £7,282 in the last financial year (April 2007 to March 2008) to various projects throughout Tyne & Wear and Northumberland.
The grants, which have been administered by the Community Foundation, will benefit people from toddlers to grandparents in Belford, Bellingham, Blyth, Burradon, Cleadon, Cowpen Quay, Heaton, Hetton-le-Hole, Kirkley, Marsden, Newbiggin by the Sea, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland, Tynedale, Whickham, Whitley Bay and Winlaton.
The Northumbrian Water fund was established in 1991 with a pledge of £100,000. The income generated by the fund is used to support community groups and projects throughout Tyne & Wear and Northumberland and the Northumbrian Water fund has given away nearly £53,000 so far to more than 87 different groups.
Gary Adey, Junior Cricket Co-ordinator at Hetton Lyons Cricket Club, said: "Northumbrian Water's donation of £400 for equipment has allowed us to increase the provision of cricket for youngsters in the area and develop cricketers of the future. Since last season we have doubled the numbers playing hardball cricket, with over 70 juniors, aged six to sixteen years, now training at the club.”
Xania Milligan, a teacher at Bellingham Gymnastics Club, said: "The £560 donation from Northumbrian Water will be put to good use for our room hire and new equipment for the children to enjoy."
George Hepburn OBE, Chief Executive of Community Foundation serving Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, said: “Northumbrian Water has held a fund with us for 17 years and in this time they have invested considerable time and money into their support of the local community. Their charitable fund is a fantastic example of how a company can make a long-term difference to the causes close to their heart.”
Louise Hunter, Northumbrian Water’s Corporate Responsibility Manager, said: “Our support for community and environmental projects is testament to how we are immersed in the communities we serve. By supporting initiatives which encourage children into sport, we can reinforce the importance of drinking enough water as part of a healthy lifestyle.”
The Community Foundation serving Tyne & Wear and Northumberland provides a service to individuals, families and companies who want to help the local community. Last year, the Community Foundation, who now manages more than 140 funds in Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, awarded grants of almost £7.8 million on behalf of its donors to almost 1,700 community groups.
