Painting a brighter Easington

04/07/2008

Support is flowing for a campaign that aims to improve life in East Durham.

Northumbrian Water is sponsoring the annual Pride in Easington family fun day, which will take place at Dalton Park, Murton on Saturday, July 5, 2008 from 10.00am to 3.30pm.

The fun day, organised by District of Easington Council, was launched last year to promote the Pride in Easington campaign, a project to make communities in the district greener, cleaner and safer. The event will feature entertainment including live bands, art workshops and pony rides, as well as showcasing organisations and services that work to improve quality of life in the area.

Northumbrian Water, which has contractors carrying out an essential sewerage upgrade at the Dalton Park shopping centre at a cost of £2.25 million, is funding a children’s art activity on the afternoon of the fun day.

Local artists Mike Clay of Sunderland and Bill Harris, from Peterlee, are to sketch an educational water cycle mural that will be painted by local children.

The colourful mural, which is eight metres in length and six foot tall, will show the water cycle on a Dalton Park landscape.

Michelle Morton, Pride in Easington Development Officer, said: “The Pride in Easington event is our biggest public event of the year and so we were delighted when Northumbrian Water agreed to provide sponsorship for the event.”

Leanne Clough, Communications Advisor at Northumbrian Water, said: “As well as providing essential services, Northumbrian Water is immersed in community life in the areas we serve and so we are delighted to be getting behind the Pride in Easington event.

“The mural has been designed as a fun way to educate children of the precious nature of water in everyday life and for health and will act as a general reminder to the public of the importance of using water wisely for a greener Easington.

“The essential works we are carrying out at Dalton Park will improve the area and reduce the risk of flooding.”

The water cycle design covers temporary hoardings at Dalton Park car park and will remain in place until the improvement works are completed on Friday, December 19, 2008.

Notes

• Easington is known as the ‘unhealthy capital’ of the North East. Government figures show that Easington is the worst-hit constituency for incapacity benefit, with 42% of claimants receiving payments for more than 10 years.

• Northumbrian Water is committed to making a significant improvement to the health and well-being of the people of Easington and surrounding areas. As well as its sponsorship of the Pride in Easington event, the water company is also a partner in Healthworks, the Healthy Living Centre in Easington Colliery, which opened in October 2007. Northumbrian Water provided County Durham Primary Care Trust with a former waterworks building, as well as support and expertise to get the initiative off the ground. In April 2008, Healthworks won the ‘Delivery Excellence through Partnership Working’ award at County Durham and Darlington Primary Care Trust’s Genesis awards.

• Northumbrian Water has also invested £10,000 in the Amateur Swimming Association’s North East project, Everyday Swim Easington, which aims to encourage swimming as an accessible form of exercise for everyone in this area.
