High level press conference to be held at Scotland Yard
Monday, 9 June 2008 at 2.30pm
Shocking statistics about bogus caller crime are to be revealed at a Scotland Yard press conference.
These facts and figures have prompted UK water companies to come together to organise a nationwide awareness campaign, supported by the Home Office and Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO), which will begin with a press conference at New Scotland Yard, London, on Monday, 9 June 2008 at 2.30pm.
Bogus caller victim, Don Pape, who was born in London and lives in Newcastle, will recount his harrowing experience. The 79-year-old, who had thousands of pounds stolen which he was saving to fund his funeral, will be supported by football legend, Jack Charlton, who is also a North Easterner and has put his weight behind the national awareness campaign.
Hazel Blears, Secretary of State for Communities, will give her support for the campaign and explain about the government’s position on bogus caller crime.
Superintendent Simon Nickless, ACPO, will provide up-to-date statistics and detail typical profiles of both offenders and potential victims.
Pamela Taylor, Chief Executive of Water UK, will outline the action water companies are taking to prevent this awful crime and how the vulnerable can protect themselves.
Dame Yve Buckland, National Chair of Consumer Council for Water, will speak on behalf of consumers.
The press conference will be facilitated by broadcaster Nicholas Owen.
Available for interview: All participants will be available for interview.
