Million pound flood protection

21/02/2008

More than one million pounds is to be spent to protect homes and land in Durham City from flooding.

Northumbrian Water is to invest £1.1 million to upgrade the surface water sewer network in Gilesgate, Durham.

The five-month improvement scheme will begin on Monday, March 17 2008 and reduce the risk of flooding to 35 properties in Fir Tree Close, Moor Crescent and Rowan Tree Avenue.

Residents in the area are invited to drop-in and find out more about the work at a customer information session being held on Monday, March 3 2008 between 2.00pm and 8.00pm at Belmont Community Centre, Sunderland Road, Gilesgate Moor, Durham.

Ashley Ferguson, Northumbrian Water’s project manager for the scheme, said:  “In times of extremely heavy rainfall the quantity of rainwater entering the surface water sewer network in the Gilesgate area has resulted in flooding to some properties and land.

“This improvement work, which will involve upgrading 750 metres of sewer pipe, will reduce this risk of flooding.  I encourage residents affected by the work to come along to the customer information session to find out more and discuss any concerns they may have.”

During the course of the essential work it will be necessary to have traffic management in place.  Temporary traffic management will be in place at the junction of Broomside Lane and Willow Tree Avenue for up to one week during the early phase of the work to enable a new surface water sewer to be installed.

A temporary road closure will gradually be moved along Willow Tree Avenue, Rowan Tree Avenue, Moor Crescent and Poplar Drive as the work progresses.

Everything will be done, through careful planning with Durham County Council, to keep any disruption to a minimum.  Customers will receive further information about this work and those who require further advice or have any special needs should ring Northumbrian Water on 0845 717 1100.

It is very unlikely that anyone from the water company will need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in the Gilesgate area.  If customers are in any doubt of a caller claiming to be from the water company, they should not let them into their home.  They should ring the company’s customer centre to confirm the caller’s identity.
