Homes in the Tees Valley are to be protected from sewer flooding.
Northumbrian Water is to invest £3 million to upgrade the sewerage network in Guisborough.
The twelve-month improvement scheme will begin on Monday, February 4 2008 and reduce the risk of flooding to 20 properties in Pine Road and Bolckow Street.
Residents in the area are invited to drop-in and find out more about the work at a customer information session being held on Tuesday, January 15 2008 between 11.00am and 8.00pm at Sunny Field House, 36 Westgate, Guisborough.
The work will involve upgrading 1500 metres of sewer pipe and the construction of a screened combined sewer overflow.
Combined sewer overflows are designed, and consented by the Environment Agency, to discharge diluted wastewater into watercourses in times of very heavy rainfall to protect properties and surrounding land from flooding.
During the course of the work the water company will be working in Pine Road, Oak Road, Parkside and Bolckow Street. It will be necessary to have temporary traffic management in place for the duration of the improvement work on Park Lane – two sets of temporary traffic lights will be gradually moved along Park Lane as required.
Ian Davison, Northumbrian Water’s project manager for the scheme, said: “In times of heavy rainfall the quantity of rainwater entering the sewerage network has resulted in flooding to six properties in Pine Road and 14 properties in Bolckow Street.
“This improvement work will reduce the risk of flooding to these properties. I encourage residents affected by the work to come along to the customer information session to find out more and discuss any concerns they may have.”
Everything will be done, through careful planning with Redcar and Cleveland Council, to keep any disruption to a minimum. Customers will receive further information about this work and those who require further advice or have any special needs should ring Northumbrian Water on 0845 717 1100.
It is very unlikely that anyone from the water company will need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in the Guisborough area. If customers are in any doubt of a caller claiming to be from the water company, they should not let them into their home. They should ring the company’s customer centre to confirm the caller’s identity.
