Quality knowledge

Residents are being invited to find out more about essential improvement work which is to be carried out in North Tyneside.

Northumbrian Water is to renew 45 kilometres of water main which serves 7,000 properties in the Billy Mill and Balkwell areas of North Shields.

The £2 million improvement scheme, which will begin on Monday, September 17 and last up to eight months, will not only safeguard water supplies for future generations but also maintain and improve tap water quality.

Customers are invited to find out more about the work and raise any questions or concerns they may have at a drop-in customer information session which is to be held on Tuesday, September 4 at St Aidens Church Hall, Lynn Road, Billy Mill, North Shields from 3.30pm to 7.30pm.

Ken Rutledge, Northumbrian Water’s Project Manager, said: “We encourage people to come along to the customer information session where our team of experts will be on hand to give out further information and advice.  Those who are affected by the work will soon receive information and advice in writing.  Should customers, especially those with special needs, have any queries or concerns relating to the work they should ring us as soon as possible."

“Carrying out this essential improvement work will ensure water continues to reach customers’ taps so they can drink the recommended eight glasses of tap water a day to help maintain a healthy lifestyle.”

Bogus callers are known to operate in Northumbrian Water’s supply area.  It is unlikely that anyone from the water company will need access into a customer’s property while this work is carried out.  If customers are in any doubt about the validity of a caller claiming to be from Northumbrian Water or the ‘water board’ they should ring the Northumbrian Water customer centre on 0845 717 1100.

For further peace of mind customers can also register a password – if anyone from the water company needs to access a registered customer’s home they will know the password.  They should either ring the customer centre or log onto www.nwl.co.uk to register.
