Four North East anglers cast all aside at a big national charity competition fished at Rutland Water.

The fly fishermen from Northumbrian Water swept the board wining the overall team of four trophy and also landing the first, second and third place individual honours.

In very windy and tough conditions the team landed 14 fish – on a day when only 89 trout were weighed in by 112 rods.

The clean sweep came just a week after a team from Northumbrian Water were also in the national honours at the Water Industry Game Fishing Championships fished at Farmoor reservoir near Oxford.

Fishing from boats in the Anglian Water WaterAid competition, Scott Everett, from Consett, County Durham, was first with four fish for 10lb 2oz, Alistair Baker from Stanley, County Durham, was second with five fish for 9lb 9oz and Brian Lillie from Gosforth, Newcastle, was third with four fish for 8lb 2oz.

Northumbrian Water fishery manager Don Coe, also from Consett, County Durham, was the fourth member of the victorious team who also managed to catch and add to the team total when the majority of competitors blanked.

He said: “For the second time in less than a week anglers from the company that runs the biggest and most successful commercial trout fishing in Europe proved that they too can do the business in national competitions.

“Trout fishing in the North East is truly a force to be reckoned with,” added Don.

The next Northumbrian WaterAid fishing fundraiser is the Kielder Water boat pairs fly fishing competition on Sunday 24 June, for further details contact Leaplish Waterside Park 01434-250294.
