Improvement with vigilance

23/05/2007

People in Darlington are being urged to be vigilant of doorstep conmen while improvement work is carried out.

Northumbrian Water is to upgrade ten kilometres of water main in the Firth Moor area.  The work, which will begin on Tuesday, May 29 2007 and take up to six months to complete, will improve water quality to x properties.

Bogus callers, who claim to be from the water company but who are only interested in stealing from customers’ properties, are known to operate in Northumbrian Water’s supply area.

During the course of the work in Firth Moor it is very unlikely that representatives from Northumbrian Water will need access into customers’ homes.

Customers should always ask for and check identification of anyone claiming to be from the water company and also look out for the blue and green Northumbrian Water logo on clothing and vehicles.

Northumbrian Water’s Cara Hall said:  “We all rely on our water supply and these callous conmen use Northumbrian Water’s identity to get into customers’ homes.  Customers should be vigilant while the improvement work in Firth Moor is carried out and if they need to check the identification of a person claiming to be from Northumbrian Water they can ring our Call Centre to make sure the person on their doorstep in genuine.

“Customers can also register a password with us – if we do need access into their home the Northumbrian Water representative calling at their home will know this word.  If in doubt – keep them out!”

Customers affected by this work will receive further information and should ring the Northumbrian Water Customer Centre on 0845 717 1100 if they have special needs or for further advice.
