Paul 'Dunn' good in Derwent WaterAid success

22/05/2007

The WaterAid fishing competition was hosted by Northumbrian Water at Derwent reservoir on Sunday the 20th of May and saw 63 anglers enjoy the fine weather and excellent fishing. This was the first time the competition has been contested with both muti-bait and fly anglers and it proved a resounding success with £1150 raised for WaterAid.  The high angler participation reflects both the quality of the fishing and the quality of the prizes with Hardy Greys contributing £530 of fishing vouchers and Northumbrian Water donating two season permits worth a total of £1260.

Despite the fly anglers having to compete with a stiff on shore breeze, fish were caught continuously all day with several eight fish catches.  The overall winner for the fly was Paul Dunn who rounded off an excellent day by catching the best fish at 9lb 4oz.  This earned Paul £50 of fishing vouchers for the biggest fish, £100 of Hardy Greys vouchers for the best catch on the fly (20lb 3oz for five fish) as well as a Northumbrian Water season permit for the 2008 season.  Second and third for the fly were Adam Maclennan (18lb 6oz for eight fish) and George Sedgewick (16lb 2oz for eight fish).

The multi-bait anglers had a slightly more challenging day although there were still some excellent catches.  In a closely fought battle, Shaun Kinahan triumphed by 7 ounces with his seven fish catch for 13lb 7oz, winning him £100 of Hardy Greys vouchers and season permit.  Second and third for the bait were Chris Duncan (13lb for seven fish) and Jeff Hambleton (12lb 8oz for eight fish).

An excellent day was enjoyed by all with a rod average of almost three fish per angler and an average fish size of 2lb.  All of the money raised will be donated to WaterAid, which works to provide clean water, sanitation and hygiene education in Africa and Asia.  Everyone went home after the competition content in the knowledge that the money raised will help to provide clean water to 80 people for the rest of their lives.

The next WaterAid event is the Kielder Boat only, pairs, fly fishing competition on Sunday 24 June, for further details contact Peter Pattinson Tel:  01434 251000.
