Reducing the risk of flooding

Millions of pounds will be invested to reduce the risk of flooding.

Northumbrian Water is to invest £4.7 million to upgrade and increase the capacity of the sewerage network in the Park Estate area of Shiremoor, North Tyneside.

The twelve-month improvement scheme will begin on Monday, January 8 2007.

Residents in the area are invited to drop-in and find out more about the work at a customer information session on Monday, December 18 2006 between 1.00pm and 8.00pm at the Shiremoor Centre, Earsdon Road, Shiremoor.

A 2.5km section of the sewerage network is to be upgraded.  The work, which will involve installing new sections of sewer pipe, upgrading existing sections of sewer pipe and installing a 6000m3 storage tank, will help to reduce the risk of flooding to land and some properties in the Shiremoor and Wellfield Estate areas.

Locations where the risk of flooding will be reduced include Allendale Crescent, Alwinton Court, Angerton Avenue, Dilston Close, Glendale Road, Horsley Avenue, Horton Avenue, Langley Avenue, Matfen Avenue, Harbottle Avenue, Millfield Avenue, Park Grove, Haddon Close, Haddon Green and surrounding areas.

Claire Sharp, Northumbrian Water’s Customer Centre Manager, said:  “We appreciate that some customers in the Park Estate area of Shiremoor and the Wellfield Estate area have suffered flooding in times of heavy rainfall and that this does cause distress.  This improvement work, which is part of our five-year (2005-2010) £380 million sewerage investment programme, will reduce the risk of flooding in the future.

“I encourage customers affected by this work to drop-in at the customer information session where we will answer any questions and address any concerns they may have.”

Customers will receive a letter and information leaflet about this work.  If they require further advice or have any special needs they should ring Northumbrian Water on 0845 717 1100.

It is very unlikely that anyone from the water company will need to gain access into customers’ homes while the work is being carried out in the Shiremoor area.  If customers are in any doubt of a caller claiming to be from the water company, they should not let them into their home.  They should ring the company’s customer centre to confirm the caller’s identity.
