Protecting and improving coastal environment

18/07/2006

Final proposals to improve waste water treatment for hundreds of people and protect Northumberland’s coastal environment have been developed.

After months of consultation with local residents of Craster and Dunstan, Northumbrian Water has worked on residents’ initial chosen option to install facilities to treat waste water from Craster.

To minimise any potential disruption in Craster, new pipelines have been re-routed across fields and grasslands.

Detailed costings have yet to be worked out but the scheme will potentially be an investment of several millions of pounds.

Residents are invited to find out more about the essential improvement work at two customer information sessions, which the water company is holding, at the Church Hall, off Whin Hill Road, on the following dates:

0 Wednesday 26 July 2006, from 3.00pm to 8.00pm
0 Wednesday 9 August 2006, from 3.00pm to 8.00pm

The new facilities will serve about 700 people and will have a positive impact on the environment.  The vast majority of the work will take place over an 18 month period and start next year.

The chosen option involves the construction of two new existing pumping stations at the existing outfall sites at Dunstanburgh Road and South Acres, to pump flows to Dunstan sewage treatment works which will also be upgraded.

Several options have been considered for the new pipeline routes.

The proposed route of the new pipe from north Craster will travel along Dunstanburgh Road, moving on to West End Road towards Dunstan.

The proposed route of the new pipe from south Craster will travel across grassland and fields, and will then follow the line of the new pipe from north Craster, avoiding the centre of Craster.

Further information has been sent to residents in writing.  If customers have any further queries, they should ring the Northumbrian Water Customer Centre on 0845 717 1100.
