Northumbrian Water is currently carrying out improvement work to the water network in Sunderland and will soon upgrade a further 700 metres of water main in the city.
The work, which will begin on Monday June 26, has been scheduled to be carried out at night from 6.00pm to 6.30am, to minimise inconvenience to traffic, pedestrians and local businesses.
Improvement work, which will take nine weeks to complete, will be carried out on Green Terrace, Vine Place and Holmeside.
Kevin Fleming, Northumbrian Water’s Project Manager, said: “The work taking place in this area of Sunderland is essential and we will use technogy, where possible, which avoids digging open trenches. We will do everything we can to get the work done as quickly as possible.
“This work is part of Northumbrian Water’s scheme to upgrade 24km of water main at a cost of £1.5 million, improving the water quality supplied to 12,000 properties. It will also reduce leakage and safeguard the water supply for future generations.”
The water company is working closely with Sunderland City Council and Nexus to carefully plan traffic management.
Phil Barrett, Director of Sunderland City Council’s Development and Regeneration Services, said: “Northumbrian Water have informed the City Council of the works and we will work with them to make every effort to ensure noise levels are kept to a minimum during the overnight working, and to plan traffic management to minimise disruption to traffic.”
Nexus' Director of Development, Bernard Garner, said: "We apologise to passengers in Sunderland for any inconvenience this work may cause. Any disruption to services will be kept to a minimum. Details of alternative bus stop arrangements are available by calling Traveline on 0870 608 2 608."
