Essential work is being carried out in Northumberland which will further protect and improve the environment.
Northumbrian Water is upgrading a waste water treatment works in Humshaugh, Northumberland, at a cost of £1.3 million which treats the waste water from more than 500 properties.
The existing treatment works, which is more than 40 years old, is being replaced with the installation of new treatment units. The capacity of the works is being increased to cope with increased waste water flows in the area since its original construction.
Improvement work has begun and the vast majority of the work will be complete in the summer. The appearance of the works will remain unchanged.
Hedley Young, Northumbrian Water’s Project Manager, said: “As part of our five-year investment programme (2005 – 2010) we are investing £380 million to upgrade 46 sewage treatment works and 160km of sewers throughout our supply area from Berwick down to North Yorkshire and across to the Pennines.
“The essential improvement work which is being carried out at Humshaugh waste water treatment works will increase the capacity of the works and allow Northumbrian Water to maintain the highest quality of treated waste water discharged into the North Tyne.
“All existing treatment units will be replaced and additional assets will be constructed which will all contribute to a substantial increase of the works overall performance.”
