Work to reduce the risk of property flooding is soon to begin in Durham.
Northumbrian Water will begin work to construct a 550-metre section of new sewer in Newton Hall on Monday, September 18.
In times of extremely heavy rainfall the sewerage network has struggled to cope with the volume of water and this has resulted in flooding to 12 properties in Lindisfarne Road, Staindrop Road, Dilston Road, Canterbury Road and Blanchland Avenue.
Customers are invited to find out more about this work and raise any questions or concerns they may have at a customer information session on Wednesday, September 13 at Northumbrian Water’s head office, Abbey Road, Durham in the Lartington Room between 5.00pm and 7.30pm.
The improvement programme, which will cost £700,000 and take up to five months to complete, is part of Northumbrian Water’s £380 million programme (between 2005 – 2010) to upgrade its vast 15,000 km sewerage network serving the North East.
Paul Joyce, Northumbrian Water’s project manager, said: “Reducing the risk of property flooding is one of Northumbrian Water’s priorities. We appreciate that it does cause customers distress."
“After we have completed this phase of the work, we will then begin a second phase to help prevent flooding to a further 12 properties in the Salisbury Road and York Crescent area of Newton Hall. Customers affected during the second phase of work will be contacted and receive information nearer the time.”
A letter, advising customers of the details of the first phase of improvement work and an invitation to a customer information session, has been sent last week.
