A North East grandmother faces the second biggest challenge of her life this weekend.
Audrey Clements, from Washington, will cycle 500km across Poland for a charity which is close to her heart. With help from sponsors and supporters including Northumbrian Water, the determined grandmother of four hopes to raise thousands of pounds.
On Sunday (10 September) the 69-year-old retired worker from Philips in Washington, will begin her marathon cycle ride from Krakow to Warsaw to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.
An excited but apprehensive Audrey said: “I’ve lost so many people close to me to cancer and have benefited from the care of Marie Curie, I felt this was an opportunity to show my appreciation and give something back to the charity.
With the help of supporters and sponsors such as Northumbrian Water, I have so far exceeded my £1,800 sponsorship target and am pedalling towards £3,000 which would mean so much to me if I could achieve.”
Carolyn King from Northumbrian Water said: “We wish Audrey well on her adventure and are pleased that we have been able to give advice on the importance of drinking water, especially while exercising – just a 2% loss of body water can result in a 10% drop in physical and mental performance.”
This cycling challenge will take five days, cycling an average distance of 100km per day, and will finish with a celebratory dinner for all 500 participants.
After completing six Great North Runs, a London Marathon and cycling around 40 miles three times a week, this challenge is well within the capabilities of this supergran.
