Improvement scheme in the Crook area (Phase 4 - Esh, Cornsay, Hollinside)

Essential improvement work to your water mains will further improve the quality of water in the Durham area.

We will be renewing 22km of cast iron water main in the Durham area, including Esh, Quebec, Cornsay and Hollinside, at a cost of £1.3 million. This work, which began on Monday 14 November 2005 and will last up to eight months, will not only safeguard water supplies for future generations but also improve water quality supplied to 2,300 properties and reduce leakage.

Phil Nixon, Northumbrian Water's Project Manager, said: "This is essential work to upgrade a section of the water mains network, parts of which are at least 60 years old."

"Water is vital for a healthy life and we make sure it reaches customers' taps."

Customers who are going to be affected by this work will have received further information and advice in writing. If customers, especially those with special needs, have any queries or concerns relating to the work they should ring the Northumbrian Water Customer Centre.

We will do all we can to minimise disruption while this work is carried out and is working closely with the local authorities to carefully plan any traffic management required. Where possible digging open-cut holes will be avoided and trenchless technology will be used to minimise disruption.

Bogus callers are known to operate in Northumbrian Water's supply area. It is unlikely that anyone from the water company will need access into a customer’s property while this work is carried out. If customers are in any doubt about the validity of a caller claiming to be from Northumbrian Water or the 'water board' they should ring the Northumbrian Water Customer Centre on 0845 717 1100.
