At Northumbrian Water, we are committed to ensuring that the drinking water it supplies to our customers throughout the region is of excellent quality. As part of this commitment our contractors, Balfour Beatty Utilities, will be carrying out improvement work to water mains in the Crook area. This improvement work, which will also increase water pressure, reduce leakage and safeguard water supplies for future generations, began on Monday 15 August 2005 and will take up to nine months to complete.
During the course of the work, it will be necessary to carry out excavation work in the public highway. There may also be a possibility that during the work you may experience discoloration to your water supply and a slight pressure difference. We ask you to check your water supply before using it, by running your kitchen cold water tap. Washing machines and dishwashers should only be used if the supply is running clear. There should be no effect on central heating systems.
It is inevitable that while this improvement work is carried out some noise and disruption will occur. Traffic access may also be affected and temporary traffic lights will be used if necessary. We would like to assure you that we will make every effort, through careful planning, to minimise any disruption and apologise for any inconvenience in advance.
If we need to interrupt the water supply to your property, we will notify you in advance. Please see the attached leaflet, which explains in more detail the advanced warning procedures. I have also enclosed a copy of the Streetwise Charter, which gives details of our commitment to this charter. Please feel free to comment on any of the six commitments indicated on the leaflet if you feel we do not live up to them.
Due to the nature of the work being undertaken, we are required to take water quality samples from a small selection of properties. This work will only be undertaken by employees of Northumbrian Water. They will be carrying official Identity Cards – you MUST inspect these before letting anyone into your home. Genuine Northumbrian Water employees will be happy for you to carry out this security check. They will also be wearing a uniform bearing our logo.
If you require any further information or advice now or during the work, please contact our Customer Centre on 0845 717 1100 where our staff will be pleased to help.
