This north east seaside town will soon reap the benefit of millions of pounds being invested to improve its water supply.
We are renewing 23km of water main at a cost of £1.4 million in the Redcar area. This work, which began on Monday 1 August 2005 will last up to 12 months. It will improve water quality to 4,000 properties and also reduce leakage and safeguard the water supply for future generations.
We will do all we can to minimise disruption while this work is carried out and is working closely with the local authorities to carefully plan any traffic management required. Work will be avoided, wherever possible, along the sea front during the busy summer period.
Phil Nixon, Northumbrian Water’s Project Manager, said: "This is essential work to upgrade the water mains network, parts of which are at least 50 years old. We will avoid digging open-cut holes and will use trenchless technology where possible to minimise disruption."
Within the next few days, customers who are going to be affected by this work will receive further information and advice in writing. If customers, especially those with special needs, have any queries or concerns relating to the work they should ring the Northumbrian Water Customer Centre.

Storage tank installation
Northumbrian Water has published an eight-page leaflet with detail about its £6.7 million project for Redcar which will benefit thousands of residents and more than one million visitors a year.
Two underground storage tanks, to increase the capacity within the sewerage network and reduce overflow to the sea in times of heavy rainfall, will be installed at two locations.
The work to install the tanks will begin on Monday 6 June 2005 and take up to 14 months to complete. One of the tanks will be in the grounds of Redcar and Cleveland College adjacent to Locke Road and the other will be on The Stray, opposite Zetland Park.
To blend in with the surroundings the top of the tanks will be below ground level. All that will be visible on completion of the work will be a number of small access covers and roads required for inspection and maintenance.
David Groark, Northumbrian Water’s Project Manager, said: "This work is part of a one-billion pound improvement programme that Northumbrian Water will be carrying out over the next five years to improve the drinking water and sewerage network throughout the North East."
"For this particular scheme, we have carried out extensive consultation with the residents of Redcar and the two locations chosen are their preferred sites."
