A Tees Valley high street will be spruced up this Christmas after receiving a ‘cracker’ of a festive donation.
Northumbrian Water has branched out and donated two 30-foot Christmas trees to Redcar to express thanks for the patience shown by residents in the town while essential work is being carried out to improve the water supply.
Phil Nixon, Northumbrian Water’s Project Manager, said: “Not only do we supply water and waste water services but we are also immersed in community life. Sponsoring the Christmas trees has enabled us to show our thanks for the continued support from the Redcar community. We would like to wish everyone in Redcar a Merry Christmas.”
Councillor Vera Moody, Cabinet Member for Economic Development with Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, said: “I am delighted that Northumbrian Water has been able to sponsor Redcar's Christmas trees. This contribution to the town centre's festive decorations is much appreciated and I hope the trees will be enjoyed by everyone who visits the town over the Christmas period”.
On November 27 2005 the Mayor of Redcar will be switching on the Christmas tree lights at 4.30pm with the help of Father Christmas and the trees will be seen in full splendour.
Many more festive activities will be bringing the town to life. There will be live music on stage all afternoon followed by Santa’s parade in the high street before the Christmas trees sparkle in glory. This will be followed by Christmas carol singing.
The £1.4 million scheme, which began in August 2005, will improve water quality to 4,000 homes and will also benefit Redcar’s many visitors. A total of 23 kilometres of water pipe is being upgraded as some of the pipes are at least 50 years old. The work will also safeguard water supplies for future generations.
