Essential improvement work will ensure families in Durham have the ingredient vital for a healthy life on tap.
Northumbrian Water is to renew 22km of water main in the Durham area, including Esh, Quebec, Cornsay and Hollinside, at a cost of £1.3 million. This work, which will begin on Monday 14 November 2005 and last up to eight months, will not only safeguard water supplies for future generations but also improve water quality supplied to 2,300 properties and reduce leakage.
Phil Nixon, Northumbrian Water’s Project Manager, said: “This is essential work to upgrade a section of the water mains network, parts of which are at least 60 years old.
“Water is vital for a healthy life and we have to ensure it reaches customers’ taps.
“It is recommended that we all drink at least eight glasses of tap water a day to help maintain a healthy lifestyle, and at around one penny for 50 glasses it is excellent value for money.”
Customers who are going to be affected by this work will have received further information and advice in writing. If customers, especially those with special needs, have any queries or concerns relating to the work they should ring the Northumbrian Water Customer Centre.

Where possible digging open-cut holes will be avoided and trenchless technology will be used to minimise disruption.
Bogus callers are known to operate in Northumbrian Water’s supply area. It is unlikely that anyone from the water company will need access into a customer’s property while this work is carried out.
