Poetry reflection benefits charity

31/08/2005

A north east grandmother is reflecting on the benefit her poetry will bring the poor.

After previously writing only a handful poems in her life, sixty-one year old Carol Gordon from Ashington, Northumberland, has written her very own poetry book within six months.

Entitled ‘Thoughts for Today and Tomorrow’, Carol’s book has recently been published and all profits will be donated to the charity WaterAid to save lives.

Initially, Carol had only intended to write the book as a legacy for her grandchildren, but it has developed into a charity fundraiser.

After listening to a speaker about providing clean water to the local people in Nepal, Carol said: “I was so impressed and moved by the talk I wanted to contribute and thought I could do so with my poetry book.”

Inspired by various life events, Carol added: “I felt compelled to write poetry at the most inopportune times and places.  Many of my poems have been composed when driving my car and I have often had to pull over into a lay-by to put pen to paper.

I have a number of favourite poems ranging from my own personal experiences to those which affect us all.”

WaterAid is Northumbrian Water’s adopted international charity which provides clean water, sanitation and hygiene education for people in Africa and Asia.  It costs only £15 to save a life.  A child dies every 15 seconds from a waterborne illness.

Copies of Carol’s poetry book can be purchased at a cost of £5.99 by contacting Julie Wilson, WaterAid fund raising secretary, via email at julie.wilson@nwl.co.uk or on 0191 301 6713.
