Flow into the future

Work to safeguard the water supply for future generations is to begin in Tynedale.

Northumbrian water is to upgrade 21 kilometres of water main in Haltwhistle, Gilsland and Greenhead.  The improvement work, which will begin on Monday 28 November, will take up to twelve months to complete.

In the north east we are fortunate to have among the best quality tap water in the country.  Some of the water pipes in this area are up to a century old and need upgrading to ensure water quality is maintained for decades to come – for today’s children and grand children.

Customers are invited to find out more about this work and raise any questions or concerns at a customer information session on Tuesday 22 November 2005 at the Methodist Church Hall, Westgate (Main Street), Haltwhistle, from 2.00pm to 7.00pm.

Project manager, Richard Johnston, said:  “This work will not only directly improve the water supply to around 2000 properties in Haltwhistle, Gilsland and Greenhead, but will also ensure that the supply will be safeguarded for the future.  A renewed water main has a life of around 100 years and if we put a new lining on the inside of an existing water main it has a life of around 70 years.

“Water is something we all take for granted, but is vital for a healthy life – think how many times you have already used it today!”

It is inevitable that there will be some disruption while this improvement work is carried out – everything will be done to keep inconvenience to a minimum and customers affected by the work will receive information within the next few days.  If customers have any queries they should ring the Northumbrian Water customer centre on 0845 717 1100.

The water company will also be working closely with archaeologists to ensure correct procedures are carried out and what lies beneath is protected.
