Get in a spin - and take as much as you can catch

04/10/2005

Anglers fishing Northumbrian Water’s Fontburn reservoir near Rothbury in Northumberland throughout November will be allowed to take all the rainbow trout they can catch.

As an end of season bonus the usual eight fish bag limit will not apply and the season has been extended for an extra month to end on 30 November.

Spinning methods with all artifical lures will also be allowed as well as the conventional multi-bait and fly fishing techniques – and the cost of a day ticket will be £3 cheaper.

Don Coe, Leisure Operations Manager, said: “We would like to thank our anglers for their support throughout the season – and these changes give them a great opportunity to get a few in the freezer for the close season. It will also help us manage stock remaining in the reservoir throughout the winter when food is scarce.”

To reflect the shorter daylight hours permit prices will go down from £16.50 to £13.50 and the fishery will be open seven days a week from 8.00am to 4.00pm. The lodge will also be open from 8.00pm to 4.00pm for ticket, bait and equipment sales.

Brown trout caught in November must be carefully released with minimal handling.

Don Coe added:”Spinning is a great active way of fishing which appeals to a wide range of anglers. It is a simple but effective method and particularly good for youngsters to try.

“You can be constantly on the move and by using various weighted spinners and lures, you can search the depths, fishing shallow or right near the bottom making it an ideal method for cooler times.

“Trout generally get more aggressive at the end of the season and there are lots of well conditioned fish still to be caught so hopefully we should see some spectacular catches.”
