Extra month to fish and cheaper permits

27/09/2005

The fishing season on Northumbrian Water’s premier waters will be extended for an extra month this year – and the cost of a day ticket will be £3 cheaper.

For the first time anglers will be able to fish Grassholme and Hury in Teesdale and Scaling on the North York moors throughout November.

Derwent reservoir in County Durham and Fontburn in Northumberland will also remain open until 30 November.

Kielder Water will close, as published, on 31 October.

Normal fishery rules will apply at the fisheries open throughout November and to reflect the shorter daylight hours permit prices will go down from £16.50 to £13.50. During November there will be no limit on the number of fish that can be taken.

The fisheries and lodges will be open seven days a week from 8.00am to 4.00pm. Any brown trout caught in November must be carefully released with minimal handling.

Don Coe, Leisure Operations Manager, said: “Many well conditioned fish are still to be caught and, with some favourable weather conditions, we could see some real arm wrenching sport this autumn.

“Trout should also be switched onto feeding on fry so large lures such as Minkies and Zonkers could well be the method, particularly at Hury and Scaling.

“ Two huge pike around the 20lb mark were caught at Scaling in the spring so the season extension could also excite specimen predator hunters too and a ticket to fish for pike will cost £10 day,” added Don.

At Scaling fishing in November will only be permitted from the dam wall.

Multi bait anglers at Derwent and Grassholme, can expect sport on ledger with Powerbait likely to be the best. Fly angers at these two reservoirs are advised to try lures like Black Fritz, Cats Whisker and Dawsons Olive fished slow on an intermediate or slow sinking line.
