Protecting Cleveland's coast

24/11/2004

Bathing waters off the Cleveland coast will be further improved by another multi-million pound investment scheme from the region’s water company.

Northumbrian Water is to spend more than six million pounds providing additional storm protection to the sewer network in Redcar which will have a positive impact on bathing water quality and ensure standards consistently comply with European legislation.

The water company is proposing to install two underground storage tanks to hold excess storm water that is currently discharged directly into the sea at Redcar during periods of heavy rainfall.  Once the rain has subsided the stored water will be returned to the sewerage network and transferred to Marske Sewage Treatment Works for treatment.

One of the storage tanks will be constructed in the town’s Granville Terrace area where two possible locations are being considered – The Stray and in Zetland Park.

Local residents have been invited to attend a customer information day to be held on Thursday 25 November at Zetland Park Methodist Church Hall, The Crescent, Redcar, any time between 2.00pm and 8.00pm.  Representatives from Northumbrian Water will be on hand to explain the proposals.

The possible location of the second storage tank required in the Mersey Road/Locke Road area of Redcar is still being considered by Northumbrian Water.  The company will be holding a second customer information day in December to advise local residents of its proposals for the second tank.
