Climbing mountains of hope

29/06/2004

Fit and determined water workers are organising a giant climb to give hope to people in Africa and Asia.

Volunteers from Northumbrian Water are managing the climb of 63 Corbetts (mountains over 2500 feet) in England, which are in Northumberland, the Lake District and North Pennines – which is more than 150,000 feet of climbing!

WaterAid, Northumbrian Water’s international adopted charity, is appealing for walkers and climbers from the region to put their walking boots on and take part in the Corbett Challenge.  A simultaneous challenge, organised by another water company, will see another 47 peaks in Wales conquered.

Thousands of people in Africa and Asia have to try to survive without things we take for granted every day – clean safe water, sanitation and hygiene education.

One of the organisers, Dave Whiteley, said:  “The Corbett Challenge, to be held on Saturday 18 September, could raise up to £50,000 and improve the quality of life of thousands of people.  How would you cope without clean, safe water or sanitation?

“Everyone who takes part will have a great time and raise money which will make a huge difference to peoples’ lives.”

Dave Whiteley can be contacted at Northumbrian Water on 0191 301 6840.  You can also find out more information and register a team at www.wateraidcorbettchallenge.org.

Climbers should be over 18 years old and part of a team of between four and seven people.  Individual entrants will be added onto another team – so, no excuse not to enter!  It is hoped that each team member will raise up to £50 in sponsorship.

£15 will provide someone with clean, safe water, sanitation and hygiene education for life.
